Why Sitting Up Straight Matters

Dear Kaleid Ladies,

How is your posture today?

Lift up your eyes. Hold your head high. Open your hands. Relax your shoulders. Sit up straight.

Postures are curious things. They are our bodies telling our souls how to reposition themselves in the world so that we remember true things. Lifting our eyes reminds us that there is a beautiful horizon beyond our next step. Holding our heads high reminds us that shame is a lie. Opening our hands reminds us to let go of things we cannot control. Relaxing our shoulders reminds us to let the weight of this morning’s burdens roll away. Sitting up straight reminds us that we are capable and present right now.

What shift in posture could your body adopt in this moment to tell your soul what is true?

Also, what are you practicing today?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Shoot 500 free throws a week. Play scales to warm up. A penny saved is a penny earned.

Practices are also curious things. They are seemingly insignificant actions that accumulate over time to build important things into our lives. Health. Confidence at the free throw line. Strong melodies and harmonies. Financial stability.

What unobtrusive practice might be worthwhile today, and what important thing would it build into your life?

Much of our spiritual formation derives from our postures and our practices. These Spirit-led, soul-shaping ways of engaging life lead us to greater confidence, compassion, and clarity when we settle into them slowly, daily, over time.

God invites us to postures…

Turn to me (Isaiah 45:22)

Stand firm (James 1:12)

Lift up your eyes (Isaiah 60:4)

Be still (Exodus 14:14)

And to practices…

Practice truth (John 3:21)

Practice hospitality (Romans 12:13)

Practice discernment (Hebrews 5:14)

Practice peace (Romans 14:19)

Practice receiving and giving (Matthew 10:8)

Sometimes in our life, especially during hard seasons, we long for the escape hatch–the portal into newness and fresh life that will move us past incremental growth. But seasons of disruption and shifting are invitations to new postures and practices that can do more than ease today’s burdens. They form us into people who are deeply secure in God’s love.

At Kaleid, we are all about practicing growth through life’s changes, shifts, and disruptions. That’s why we are offering our Embracing Shifts group again this year. We meet monthly, for an hour and a half. Each month we sit together with a word…a posture or a practice…that orients our hearts so that we can discern more deeply how the Spirit is moving as we embrace the unique shifts in our lives. It’s a quiet space with a lot of listening, a simple focus, and sweet community. We’d love for you to join us as we lean into postures and practices hidden in words like awareness, presence, willingness, truth, power, desire, etc. You can learn more and sign up here!

Gratefully,

The Kaleid Team
